stu-di-o: the workroom or atelier of an artist, a place for experimentation and production I learn very quickly so am interested in unusual projects where the work required may not be easily definable. My education in architecture has given me good preparation to approach any situation with an open mind and the ability to frame the question as well as propose and carry through with possible responses. I like to be part of a group that works works collaboratively, where members learn from and teach each other and engage in a critical process. To me, an architectural approach is one that starts with analysis of context, of who, where, when and how. Desires and parameters are identified and balanced. Strategies are developed, detailed and executed, making use of appropriate processes, resources and mediums. Of course, this approach is not strictly architectural. It is a design approach that has lead me into other fields and back again.

![]() | Born and brought up in the UK, I first came to the US on a one year internship program. I fell in love with New York City and decided to stay for college, graduating several years later with a professional undergraduate degree in architecture from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn (BArch with highest honors). My thesis proposed that the relationship of architects and non-architects can and should be one of collaborative teaching and learning, and drew on my experiences working with first and fifth grade students on architectural projects. I currently am an Associate at the New York office of an architectural firm with offices around the US and in Europe, and I do some independent consulting on projects that interest me. I have taught at the Pratt Saturday Art School and have written for Architectura, a CD-ROM based magazine. I was an assistant editor for Design and Feminism: Re-Visioning Spaces, Places, and Everyday Things, an anthology edited by Joan Rothschild.

![]() | Located in New York City, I am available to work for clients anywhere in the world via electronic communication and a small amount of travelling. I may also consider donating services to non-profit organizations with causes I believe in. architecture (from programming to construction administration, in collaboration with a licensed architect) I prefer to be involved with projects from start to finish as I see the process of architecture to be an integrated whole comprised of intertwining parts. I work very much from the interior experience of space, and from the relationship between spaces. Light and materials are important elements, as are site visits and establishing a stimulating working collaboration with the client and user. graphic design I create graphics that make intense use of type as a cross between writing and drawing. I incorporate scanned and maniupulated drawings, images and objects, moving between paper and screen in a seemless fashion. My graphics are both provocative and pragmatic. publication and web site design When I work with text, I familiarize myself with it and create a design that enhances but does not distract from the content. writing (including research) I love to write and I write a lot. Words often form an integral part of a project. Sometimes they are the project. photography (including black and white processing and printing, computer touch up and manipulation) art and design education Working independently or in close collaboration with teachers and parents (locally or via electronic communication) I introduce architecture and art related projects into the regular curriculum.
